Diesel-fuel is inherently unstable. It begins to degrade as early as 22 days from the time it is refined. Degradation leads to the introduction of many contaminants to the fuel including sludge formation, acid build up, water, and bacterial growth. These contaminants have an erosive and abrasive effect on the fuel system leading to poor fuel combustion and increased emissions that are known to be harmful to both the environment and humans.

Diesel engine emissions contain a mixture of gases and particulates, such as:

Oxides of nitrogen – These are gases that form when diesel fuel is burned with excess air.
Carbon monoxide – A colourless, odourless gas produced when the hydrocarbons in diesel fuel are not burned completely.
Hydrocarbons – Gas compounds that form as a result of unburned fuel and lubricating oil.
Particulate matter – Very small particles that form during the combustion process.

Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons are the primary components of diesel engine emissions that increase when diesel-fuel is contaminated. The only way to reduce their emissions is to maintain the diesel-fuel in as close to a “refined” condition as possible by periodically removing contaminants from the fuel with regular fuel cleaning. Historically this has been a time consuming and cost prohibitive process preventing many businesses from getting their fuel cleaned regularly, or at all.
